Since 1913 the Ethnology Department has been located in one of the buildings of National Museum, the interior of which has been arranged to illustrate a traditional urban house in Bosnia and Herzegovina.  The collection of ethnological material began when the Museum was established in 1888, with the purchase of some very valuable ethnological artifacts such as sets of traditional costume.  The Department is engaged in museological work, scientific research and educational work. It publishes the annual Glasnik Zemaljskog muzeja, Vol. Ethnology, has one permanent exhibition and prepares several thematic exhibitions each year.
