MUSEUM ACTIVITIES OF THE ETHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT (1888–2008)

 

Exhibitions of the Ethnology Department, 1888-2008

 

  • First permanent exhibition in the Pension Fund building, opened 1888

  • Great exhibition of folk costumes in Vienna, 1891

  • The Ethnology Department took part in exhibitions in Zagreb and Timişoara in 1891

  • The Ethnology Department took part in the Millennium Exhibition in Budapest in1896

  • The Ethnology Department took part in the International Exhibition in Brussels in 1897

  • The Ethnology Department took part in the Jubilee Exhibition in Vienna in 1898

  • Paris Exhibition, 1900 – the Bosnian Pavilion was one of the finest

  • Hunting Exhibition in Vienna, 1910 – ethnographic items from the Museum were on display.

  • The first permanent exhibition of the Ethnology Department was opened on 4 October 1913

  • The first floor housed original rooms, elaborately decorated with wood carvings and with all the usual fixtures and fittings.  They also contain figures in folk costume, arranged geographically; one room contained costumes from Albania, Greece and Bulgaria.  One of the ground-floor halls housed textiles, and the other, the products of the applied arts in metal, wood, ceramics and leather.

  • The Ethnology Department took part in the Hygienics Exhibition in Belgrade in 1933 and the Hunting Exhibition in Berlin

  • The second permanent exhibition of Ethnology Department was established in 1948. The left-hand ground-floor hall contained an exhibition of rural life in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the right-hand hall a display of the industrial arts in Bosnia and Herzegovina.  The first-floor rooms contained an exhibition of Muslim bourgeois life in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

  • Jewellery in Bosnia and Herzegovina from late Antiquity to modern times, 1963, a joint exhibition of the Archaeology and Ethnology Departments. 

  • Embroidery and jewellery of Bosnia and Herzegovina (B. Vladić-Krstić, 1973)

  • The exhibition travelled to Belgium, Holland, Denmark, Great Britain, France, the USSR, and Pula and Belgrade in 1980 on the occasion of a session of the UNESCO General Assembly.

  • The third permanent exhibition of the Ethnology Department was established in 1974. Both ground-floor halls contained an exhibition of the life and culture of the rural population in Bosnia and Herzegovina.  The exhibition on the first floor remained unchanged.

  • Folk art of Yugoslavia, 1980, Belgrade, Sarajevo, Skopje.  The part of the exhibition for Bosnia and Herzegovina was designed by Lj. Hadžidedić.

  • Costumes of the peoples and nationalities of Yugoslavia, 1982, Ljubljana.  The part of the exhibition for Bosnia and Herzegovina was designed by S. Bajić

  • Traditional rural household wares in Bosnia and Herzegovina (A. Bugarski and S. Bajić, 1982)

  • Collection of gifts of Dr.  Đuro Mrazović (Lj. Hadžidedić, 1983)

  • Rural winter clothing in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Lj. Hadžidedić, 1984)

  • Restoration of the permanent exhibition of the life and culture of the urban population of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the 19th century, 1998.

  • Decoration and designs on Bosniac urban household wares (S. Bajić and L. Džeko, 1998). The exhibition visited Zenica in 2002, Visoko in 2003, Prijepolje, Serbia, in 2005

  • EXPO 98 – participation in the world exhibition in Lisbon, Portugal. The part of the exhibition for Bosnia and Herzegovina was designed by S. Bajić, 1998

  • Bosnia and Islamic culture in Europe (K. Adahl, S. Bajić and L. Džeko, 1999/2000/2001).  The exhibition visited several cities and towns in Sweden and Norway.

  • Days of the potato and the onion (M. Filipović,  2001)

  • Leather-working and opanak-making in Visoko, in association with the Visoko Museum (L. Džeko and S. Hodović,  2002)

  • Gifted items of the Ceković family (S. Bajić, 2003)

  • Congress of archaeologists and anthropologists, 1894, Sarajevo; presentation to the international public of the scientific achievements of experts from the Provincial Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

  • Brief ethnographic research works, 1900-1916 – findings published in the Journal of the Provincial Museum

  • Research into the old Slav heritage, mediaeval stećak tombstones, population movements, historical toponomastics and mediaeval mining, herders' summer settlements, 1920-1940 – findings published in the Journal of the National Museum (the Journal).

  • Research into and collection of folklore material from Bosnia and Herzegovina under the auspices of the Institute for the Study of Folklore, 1946 and later.

  • Research into rural folk culture, field research work conducted by experts from the Ethnology Department, 1947-1951 – findings published in the Journal.

  • Research in the Travnik, Vareš, south-eastern and central Bosnian regions by experts from the Ethnology Department – findings published in the Journal.

  • Research into folk costume in the Sava valley region by Z.  Čulić, 1955-1959 – findings published in the Journal.

  • Ethnological folklore study of the Livno plain by a team of experts from the Ethnology Department, 1958-1962 – findings published in the Journal.

  • Synthesizing studies of traditional rural architecture, A.  Bugarski: ″Skeletni sistem gradnje u bosanskom seoskom graditeljstvu″ and ″Spratna kuća centralne Bosne″  - findings published in the Journal.

  • Systematic collection and study of fundamental ethnological folklore material on the traditional and contemporary life and culture of the peoples and nationalities of Bosnia and Herzegovina in rural and urban settings – planned long-term research from 1986 to 2000 as part of the DC XIII project involving experts from the Ethnology Department, the Music Academy and the Faculty of Political Sciences, with a view to determining the features of traditional and contemporary folk culture.  Research brought to a halt by the 1992-1995 war (the findings of two projects have been published as special publications: ″Historijska narodna predanja u BiH,″ by V.  Palavestra, and ″Muslimanska epika,″ by Đ. Buturović)

  • ″Narodne pjesme Muslimana 1 and 2,″ by Đ. Buturović, special publication, 1996.

  • Study: ″Osnovne karakteristike tradicionalnih seoskih nošnji u Hercegovini,″ by S. Bajić – published in the Journal. 

  • Round table: ″Towards the modernization of the Zemaljski muzej Bosne i Hercegovine,″ 1999, held in the National Museum in association with the NGO Cultural Heritage without Borders.

  • International congress ″Disasters and Protection against Disasters in Museums″ held in 2001 in the National Museum in association with the Tiroler Landesmuseum Ferdinandeum, Innsbruck, Austria. 

  • International symposium ″Archaeology meets Museum,″ in association with the NGO Cultural Heritage without Borders, held in the National Museum in 2005

  • The National Museum in the Schools of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, educational project implemented during the school years 2006/07 and 2007/08.

  • Ethnological folklore study of Prusac and its environs (field survey), conducted by a team of experts from the Ethnology Department with funding from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, 2008.

  • Ethnological folklore study of Kraljeva Sutjeska (field survey), conducted by a team of experts from the Ethnology Department with funding from the Federal Ministry of Tourism and the Environment, 2008.Changes to the way of life of the refugees and displaced persons of eastern Bosnia – the example of the urban areas of Vogošća and Osijek, conducted by a team of experts from the Ethnology Department with funding from the Cantonal Ministry for Displaced Persons and the Sarajevo City Authority, 2008.
